PRESS RELEASE

MIDNIGHT ARREST OF LEFTIST OMOBUDE AGHO BY THE DSS.

It has become imperative we inform the general public of the incident leading to the arrest of Leftist Omobude Agho in the early hours of 14th June, 2024 at about 2am.

It all started as a community leadership adjustment wherein the Odionwere (community head) sacked the Okaighele (youth leader), one Mr. Dominic Edobor of Ugbineh community which is located in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo state and replaced with another youth member. The Okaighele has been accused of financial impropriety, illegal and indiscriminate sales of community lands, high handedness and the use of law enforcement agents to harass and oppress members of the community.

It must be noted that, Leftist Omobude Agho’s maternal father hails from Ugbineh community where he built his house and lived till his death. Being a human rights activist who abhors oppression and an indigene of the community, he took steps in ensuring the community live in peace where one man cannot become the overload of all. He couldn’t allow oppression, intimidation of others or misappropriation of the commonwealth of the community by a single person using the instrumentality of coercion to fester.

Mr. Dominic Edobor having being stopped from further usage of coercion in his operations in the community, resorted to the use of the palace of the Oba of Benin and the police to arm twist the Odionwere to submission and both attempts failed. He ran to court and the matter is still pending in a high court sitting at Okada.

After trying hard to use these institutions to achieve his aim and it seems they couldn’t be used, he decided to use the Department of State Security (DSS) to arrest Leftist Omobude Agho and others by doing a petition alleging threat to life and promotion of native war which is still under investigation by the DSS.

On the arrest of Leftist Omobude Agho, the DSS personnel numbering about 15 stormed his private resident at about 2am with three Hilux Vans and one private car. While he was asleep with his family, men of the department broke into his compound and room pointing guns at him in bed while commanding him to follow them. At first, he thought, they were armed robbers or kidnappers. It was when he put on the light that he realized they were kitted in DSS vests. The operation was carried out in a gestapo style depicting a movie scene wherein a hardened criminal or a most wanted terrorist that has a lot of ammunition and lieutenants in a hideout. He was immediately whisked away to their office.

The leadership and members of Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO) in our numbers marched to the office of the DSS to demand for his release after faulting the operational style adopted by the DSS when an invitation to respond to a petition would have been sufficient without necessarily making it look like a sponsored operation. Edo state and the country have more than enough insecurity issues to deal with that requires such deployment of personnel and resources in the operation for the arrest of one armless Leftist Omobude Agho.

Leftist Omobude Agho’s statement was obtained and he was interrogated based on the petition where his name was mentioned. The interrogating officers adhered to the provisions of the Administrative of Criminal Justice Act/Law (ACJA/L) and were very professional in conduct. A medical doctor was on the ground for checks and drugs administration while meals were provided for suspects in custody.

After the interrogation, he was released on bail at about 5pm and was received by the cheering members of the civil society led by the Interim TEC Chairman, Leftist Austine Enabulele who have been at the DSS gate as early as 7am chanting solidarity songs.

STATEMENT BY EDO CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS (EDOCSO) ON THE PURPORTED PROPOSED CLOSURE OF EDO CENTRAL HOSPITAL BY EDO STATE GOVERNMENT LED BY HIS EXCELLENCY, MR. GODWIN NOGHEGHASE OBASEKI AND DEMAND FOR REVERSAL OF INCREASED MEDICAL SERVICE COSTS TO FORMER AFFORDABLE STATE DELIVERED ON SATURDAY, 8TH JUNE, 2024

We welcome all the ever steadfast comrades, citizens of our great nation and residents of Edo state, members of the press, distinguished ladies and gentlemen to this press conference.

The attention of leaders and members of Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO) has been drawn to what seemed like a rumour but now seeming true of a purported plan by the Edo state government of permanent closure of the Edo Central Hospital which has served the lower class of the society over the years.

Further information and investigations have also revealed that there have never been employment of doctors since the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki came on board, talk more of training and retraining of medical personnel of the Edo Central Hospital till this moment. The government has not improved anything about the hospital, rather it was demolished to pave way for a museum project that has no direct bearing on the welfare of the people of Edo State .The pregnant women unit (Maternity) and other skeletal service delivering units by the hospital that were relocated to the Sickle Cell building in GRA is being penned down for total closure.

Most recently is the sharp increment of hospital bills, like case file which used to be N6000 (six thousand naira) has been increased to N15000 (fifteen thousand naira) this is just example of the increment that touches everything which has further contributed to the pains of the common man in Edo State. As we speak Edo state do not have Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the state hospital which finally suggests that healthcare is gone and of no interest or importance to the government of the day.

It should be noted that, our forebears established the central hospital in such a strategic location for easy access and affordability for the people. What the government led by Mr. Godwin Obaseki currently doing is a far departure from it, and this is anti-people, wicked and a devalue for the lives of Edo people and residents respectively.

One would think the new hospital built using tax payers’ money by the former governor of Edo state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole would have been equipt with modern health equipment as an expansion of the Edo Central h ospital to boost the government health facility in the state by this OBASEKI’s administration as at when he took over in 2016, instead it was surreptitiously privatized by him, which has become far from the reach and affordability of the poor.

In the light of the above, we reject in its entirety the total close down of Edo Central Hospital and recent increased in Hospital bills of the average and poor Citizens in Edo State, using the Edo Central Hospital facility.

We also like to let the Edo State Government and the general public know that, if this Hospital is closed down finally, Edo will be the only state in Nigeria who do not have a state owned Central Hospital.

OUR DEMANDS:

  1. That the governor comes out openly and tell Edo people the state of Edo central hospital as at today
  2. A reversal of all the astronomical increment of charges in the public hospital for easy access and affordability by commoners.
  3. The hospital should as a matter of urgency be restored with functional equipment.
  4. Doctors should be employed to cover the current shortage being experienced.
  5. There should be training and retraining of all medical personnel in the hospital

We would like to remind Mr. Governor his action or inaction on the health issues raised is capable of having far reaching impact on the forthcoming governorship election and his party if ignored, and we will employ everything within our reach to let Edo People know the Evil this Administration has done to them in the Health Sector in Edo State as life is of very great value to God and Man as well as EDOCSO.

Governor Godwin Obaseki may have done his best in Edo state, he should leave the Central Hospital in the level he has reduced it to, since his tenure expires in few months time for whoever takes over from him to bring it to life for the good people of the state.

We want to say thank you Edolites for your patience and hard work so far, together we shall ensure a better health system tomorrow for Edolites and not this present better yesterday that we are currently experiencing.

Let’s not be discouraged by the show of ineptitude and insensitivity of our leaders but focus on taking back our Health system from the hands of greedy politicians who takes IGR above human lives.

God Bless The
Federal Republic Of Nigeria!

God Bless Edo State!

God Bless Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO)

God Bless Us All Edolites.

Thank you.

EDO CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS (EDOCSO) HALT ANOTHER JUNGLE JUSTICE MEANT ON MR EGUAVUON FRIDAY

We Will Never Allow Anybody To Ridicule Our Judicial justice System A Threat To Justice is a Threat To Human Existence

This was the outcome from the swift intervention from members of Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO) Igueben study centre led by it’s coordinator Leftist Enabulele Larry. in a matter wherein a police officer Inspector Ogbanemen Joshua muddled the justice administration procedures to send an innocent citizen to prison without legal trial

Few days ago, the attention of the Civil Rights group was drawn to intervene in a matter on 20th may 2024, wherein one Mr Friday Eguavuon. was remanded at Ubiaja correctional centre for an allege case of ASSAULT without trial relying on the overbearing influence on the court by the prosecutor Inspector Ogbanemen Joshua who was also the complainant on the case.

It was a day of confusion and agony for the family of Mr Eguavuon, an indigene of Idumowu quarters, Ebelle in Igueben local govt area when their son Mr Eguavuon Friday was reminded at Ubiaja correctional centre without trial on the 20th of May, 2024.

According to the prosecutor who is also the complainant in the matter, trouble started when Mr Friday gave his Android phone to a nearby phone charge service centre (Ojie Wizzy) for service. Upon his return to get his phone, he noticed a damaged on the screen, this however made him Friday to draw the attention of the shop owner (Mr Ojieze) to the issue. In response, Mr Ojieze told Mr Friday to meet with the apprentice boy who conducted the poor service and do whatever he wishes as this problem is almost becoming a norm in the shop. On this, Mr Friday requested his phone be fix in the next two hours and left. After two hours, Mr Friday came back and discovered the problem remained unchecked, which now led to a fisticuff between the duo, which attracted the attention of passers-by including some police officers among them were one inspector Joshua a prosecutor with Ebelle divisional police station, Ebelle. In an attempt to separate them from fighting, Insp. Joshua was allegedly punched by Mr Friday, which led to the arrest and detention of Mr Friday on that same day which was on Saturday 18th May, 2024. The arrest and detention however attracted the attention of the community dwellers who came out in their numbers to appeal for alternative resolution to the matter but all efforts yielded no result, with the insistence the man must go to court as he has already intimated the concerned authorities, hence Mr Friday was denied administrative bail.

On Monday 20th May 2024, the families of Mr Friday prepared and make themselves available at Ebelle police station where Mr Friday was be move to Magistrate court and to be arraign according to the prosecutor and also the complainant in the matter. But their hope and that of the counsel Barr. Ugboh were hashed, when they were made to understand at the police station that a warrant for remand has already be signed and issue by the court. The counsel who is about 15yrs in the bench, however queries the authenticity of the document, it was however shown to him but the counsel again questioned the source of the document when the court is yet to sit and entertain the matter, but the prosecutor told him that it can also be done that way so long the document is sign by the Magistrate. But the counsel maintain that this is strange and at variance with the provision of the Edo state administration of criminal justice law ACJL 2018, that a suspect will be remanded without trial, even when there is court sitting for the day. At this point, Mr Friday was brought out from the cell and taken to Ubiaja correctional centre, which led to the report of the above matter to Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO) Igueben study centre by the family members, and thereafter the leader of the delegation and coordinator of the study centre Leftist Enabulele Larry swiftly went to the police station as well as the court to confirm the report, behold the reports were correct and corroborated by the IPO and Inspector Joshua (the complainant) who equally doubled as the prosecutor on the matter.

Our Question To Them on That Are:

  1. Who is now the judge, the police prosecutor or the court?
  2. Does our courts now remand suspects without trial, even on bailable matters such like this assault?
  3. Who is that learned judge that sat on his comfort home and issue a warrant of remand on a case of assault like this without trial and room for bail as provided by our laws ?
  4. Is Assault Now A Capital Offence In This Court? This miscarriage of justice was however escalated with a well coordinated petition to the appropriate authority in our legal jurisprudence which saw the urgent and timely intervention of the Magistrate to save the image and integrity of the court. With the series of administrative reforms in our legal system, this is the least expectation from anybody.

Mr Eguavuon Friday has been released yesterday unconditionally & his freedom regained against the evil mechanisation of the enemies of De-jure under a democratic dispensation as operated by the Nigeria state.

We wish to thank the leadership of the Left Movement (EDOCSO) for standing side-by-side with it’s leadership in Igueben study centre to resist this affront against the ideal of fair justice procedure and administration in the judicial system.

We therefore salute all lovers of justice for standing against this injustice against the common man.

We also say a big thanks to our human rights counsel A.O Olonaiye for his tireless efforts thus far.

We wish to call on the attention of the Nigeria police authority Edo state command led by COMPOL Funsho Adegboye in line with his resolve to lead the police institution in Edo with democracy and fear of God, to call for thorough investigation on this rape on our justice system perpetuated by INSPECTOR JOSHUA OGBANEMEN, the police prosecutor with Ebelle divisional police headquarter with a view of reviewing his position with the division so as to save the good image and integrity of the police as an integral part in justice administration before the members of the public.

Mr Eguavuon Friday is the person at the middle in the above picture when he just regains his FREEDOM from Ubiaja correctional centre.

Esoleto E africa

We will not stop until the last man on the street is totally free from oppression and intimidation
