This was the focus point of interactions, when members of Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO) Igueben study centre ably led by the coordinator Leftist Larry Enabulele met with the Police Area Command, Irrua on a familiarization visit. The police area commander (ACP Benjamin Benafa) joined by other superior officers in the command with two divisional police officers under the command (i.e Dpo Irrua & Ewu) respectively, excluding Igueben were duly on ground to join their boss in giving a warm reception to the visiting human rights practitioners. Discussions were centered on possible ways of bringing a check to the current security challenges including the current spate of kidnapping in the state.
The ACP who promised not to relent in ensuring the good people of the command sleep with two eyes close, however solicited for support and collaborations with the people in nipping the problem on bud.
Ealier, the CSO members thanked the area commander for the show of support and solidarity during her 2023 – End – Of – Year reach-out program.
Highpoint of the visit was the presentation of stationaries as support in our quest of ridding the society of criminally minded individuals.
It is on record that ACP Benjamin Benafa is one of the gallant officers who execute his duties and functions as a police officer with all manners of civility, diligence and respect for human rights.
The CSO however promised to engage the relevant stakeholders and individuals in the society to support the security agencies in terms of operational facilities, as it is practically not possible to fight security challenges with ordinary fingers or crude facilities.

We cannot continue to live like those in a banana republic where the rules of law are not respected or abide to.
Nigeria is guided by laws, which the Edo State Government and other relevant government agencies must know and obeyed.
In recent times, the civil society space have been inundated with series of complaints and petitions from members of the public on the harassment, intimidation, forceful collection of levies and violations of citizens’ rights by Edo State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, the Local government Councils and their agents such as ANNEWATT a private union and other unauthorized bodies all in the name of enforcing the Governor’s order which never existed and thereby arresting and extorting citizens without the money been accounted for
For the purpose of clarity and retrospection, precisely on the 11th of June, 2013 when the former governor of Edo state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole made an executive fiat on the ban and use of motorcycles from plying all the roads in Oredo, Ikpoba-okha, and Egor local government areas of Benin city and Oluku, Ekosodin villages in Ovia North East Local Government area and Eyaen village (Coca-Cola cola area) in Uhumwonde local government area effective 12 noon 11th of June, 2013 without first passing through legislative processes of making laws.
After the verbal pronouncement of the ban, a lot of motorcycle riders were arrested and prosecuted without fair hearing given to them, thereby violating their fundamental rights, this now made the motorcycle riders, the civil society organisations and other concerned citizens to challenge the order in a court of competent jurisdiction, a legal battle that was Headed by Barr. Dele Uche Igbinedion, after series of court hearing the applicants lost the case and the defendants got judgement in their favour, the applicants were dissatisfied with the judgement which made them approached the appellate court, where they got judgement in their favour in suit No. CA/B/341/2014 and a cost was awarded to them on 25th May, 2021.
Below is the reproduction of the appeal court judgement delivered by Hon Justice Biobele Abraham Georgewill as the lead president

And ever since this judgement was delivered Edo state Government, the local government, the Nigeria Police Force and other sister agencies keep harassing members of the public found driving motorcycles in Benin city.
We cannot continue to live in a state where a court judgment can not be obeyed or adhered to.
The Africa charter and the 1999 constitution chapter 4 talks about FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS of citizens clearly gives citizens rights to have property, movable and immovable properties of choice.
We also have met with the above institutions for peaceful dialogue to advice them on the need to obey the laws, which they all agreed to follow but most time they end up doing worst.
We are using this medium to inform all government agencies to obey the appeal court Judgement to avoid anarchy in the land, failure to do so will leave us with no other option than to shut down any office who tried to undermine the laws of the land and be resisted by Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO)
Our laws must be abide to and be respected at all time.

MASSES HOUSE: 6B, Obakhavbaye Street Opposite Spirit And Life Bible Church Off Oba Market Road, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria.
The leadership of Edo Civil Society Organisations ably led by the Interim TEC Secretary, Leftist Grace Okike paid an advocacy visit to the chief judge of Edo state, Justice Daniel Okungbowa and other senior members of the bench over series of petitions received from the public to EDOCSO on the use of trumped-up charges by some officers of police in getting prison remands.
The meeting which was at the instance of EDOCSO was to draw the attention of the Judiciary and the chief judge in particular to the new trend of officers of the Nigeria police force, whereby they do use trumped-up charges to remand suspects in prisons, which has contributed largely to the congestion in various prisons in Edo state.
In recent times, the security agencies most especially the Nigeria police force has used the trumped-up charges to send innocent citizens to prisons, knowingly and unknowningly either to favour the highest bidder or to cover up their inability to do proper investigation on cases been reported to them.
As we all know the ACJA law of Edo state clearly states the manner and ways cases and suspects should be followed, most at times the laws are not usually followed, thereby leading to the violation of citizen’s rights.
The meeting was very interactive, Informative and ideals sharing, the chief judge promised to look into the issues raised and follow it up to the benefits of Edo State citizens and residents.

COURT STRIKES OUT SUIT AIMED AT DESTABILIZING EDOCSO :
The court suit instituted by Curtis Ogbebor, Kelly Osunbor Omokaro and Charles Idehen against Omobude Agho, Osazee Edigin, Omoruyi Egharevba, Justice Itietie and Keshi St. Lawrence over non existent leadership tussle that was raised as a result of , insubordination, rebellion and unhealthy competition within the organisation has been struck out by the high court 6 sitting in Benin City today,Thursday 15th February 2024.
The presiding judge, Hon. Justice Peter Akhimie Akhihiero having examined the arguments raise by Barr U. L Osa – Uwagie, counsel to the defendants, the suit which had been running since 2022 after the first one was struck out in April 4th 2022 for lack of merit, was also struck out and dismissed due to the abandonment of the case in court by the applicants and their lawyers (which have been changed severally), pursuant to court order 30 rule 4 which talked about diligence persecution. A cost of one hundred thousand naira (N100,000) was awarded against them in favour of the defendants.
The social media space had been flooded with wrong news and blackmail of a purported plan by the immediate past executive of EDOCSO not to vacate office after expiration of tenure.
It must be stated that, EDOCSO as a coalition of several civil society groups and community based formations known as study centres is guided by rules which inordinate ambitions cannot infiltrate or derailed.
The sole thrusts of EDOCSO is for the pursuant of good governance, social justice and human rights and cannot be seen exhibiting the characteristics of a political party or politicians. It is a collaboration where your time and money is required for the overall good of the larger society hence the struggle for positions or titles aren’t what should be expected from any member.
The outcome of the court matter which is first in of its kind since the formation of EDOCSO has a lot of lessons to be learnt and the need to further prevent any future attempts to break the ranks. The suit was borne out of lack of adequate knowledge, over ambition and rebellious dispensation.
Let it been known to the general public that the present constituted leadership of Edo Civil Society Organisations, (EDOCSO) is ably led by the interim TEC chairman Leftist Austine Enabulele and any body or group of persons found parading themselves as the leaders, using any of our property without authorization or impersonating the network will be dealt with according to the laws
We want to reinterate that we hold no grudge against those that took the coalition to court but wish to rather advise them to retrace their steps and abide by the tenets of activism even if they decide not to belong to the coalition going forward.
We equally want to use this medium to extend the hands of friendship and comradeship to them should they decide to return to the coalition which has contributed immensely to their consciousness growth and development over the years.
In all, there is no victor, no vanquished.
