EDO CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS EDOCSO CELEBRATES 2023 WORLD HUMAN RIGHTS WEEK
The annual celebration which is observed on 10th December every year, a day which the United Nations General Assembly adopted in 1948 as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It’s a day set aside for all human defenders and people all over the world to celebrate themselves and the need to stand up for own rights and that of others, to uphold the rights that protect us all and to promote human rights through education.
The human rights week started with a protest march with leadership ably led by the interim TEC chairman leftist Austine Enabulele and members of Edo Civil Society Organisations in large numbers marching through various streets to the offices of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Matters Commission (ICPC) and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where they were received by the head of legal unit of ICPC Barr. Dennis Nnaemeka and his EFCC counterpart, Mr. Kanu Idagu who is the zonal commander EFCC Benin zonal headquarters respectively.
The purpose of the protest was to draw the attention of the various anti graft agencies to stop the selective prosecutions of suspects, the group with various inscriptions on their banners and placards read as follow ‘Nigerians are not impressed with your fight against corruption!’ ‘Nigerians are Suffering’ ‘equal energy on Yahoo Boys should be channelled in the fight against corrupt Politicians’ and many others.
The group also express their worries in the way and manner in which petitions are being handled.
The leadership of the two anti graft agencies thanked the group for their peaceful protest and promise to look into the various complaints and get back within a short period of time, they also called for more collaborations and promised to support the fight against corruption, they assured that all petitions will be looked into.
DAY 2
In the day two of the world human rights week celebration, EDOCSO also provided free medical health check and preliminary treatment for members of the public who came from far and near benefitted from the free service.
The purpose of the free health check is to give back to the society also to help residents who cannot afford the public and private medical services which is aimed at helping lower the risks of illness and identifying any early signs of health issues.
DAY 3
The world human rights day commemoration climaxed the week long celebration which held with presentation of awards to deserving personalities. The event featured two guest speakers. Dr. Moses Oshegbu a health officer from the Federal Neuro-psychiatric hospital spoke on the topic MENTAL HEALTH – EFFECT OF DRUG ABUSE while M.A Adamu Ph.D. assistant commander, narcotics NDLEA Benin zone also elightened on the topic DRUG ABUSE, A SOCIETAL PROBLEM AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS.
Awards and cash donations were also presented to some well deserved citizens who have contributed immensely to their communities and the country in general,
The awardees are -:
- Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe. Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security – Bestowed with the award of excellence In recognition for his concern and support for local farmers and selfless service to the nation in agricultural development.
- Mr. Nnamdi Ndoka aka Mr IBU. – Bestowed with the award of Recognition for Community Service.
- Mr. Matthew Kalu, DPO Evbuotubu Divisional Headquarters – Bestowed with the award of Recognition as the Most Citizen Friendly And Fair Police Officer of The Year.
- Mr Igbinedion Osas Victor aka Ebo Technical Junction – Award of Recognition For Community Service.
- Bonaventure Anyanwu – Bestowed with the award of Recognition for Community Service.
- IGP Solomon Arase Ph.D (Retd) – Bestowed with the award of excellence in recognition of his contribution to humane policing.
- Leftist Aimuae-osa Igbinomwanha – Bestowed with the award of Recognition as The Most Dedicated and Selfless Serving Leftist of the Year. And some others persons who were also recognized
